Blow flies are easily distinguished by their metallic colors, ranging from black to green and copper. They are larger than typical house flies and are known for their loud buzzing. These flies lay eggs on exposed meat, with larvae developing into adults in 7 to 15 days, depending on the species. They’re often found near garbage, animal waste, and decaying food, which can lead to significant issues around homes and businesses.
The Oriental latrine fly, a blow fly species, has been causing problems in Southern California since 1989. They thrive in large numbers near dumpsters and shaded areas, especially during summer. Larvae located near homes may move indoors to complete their life cycle, leading to an indoor fly nuisance. Good waste management and sanitation are key in controlling blow fly populations.
The little house fly (Fannia canicularis) flies in an unusual pattern, often seen hovering in mid-air without frequently landing on food, reducing the chance of food contamination.
They lay eggs in rotting vegetable matter, compost, or animal waste, particularly from pets like rabbits and poultry. The life cycle spans about 24 days, from egg to adult. While they can be a nuisance, they prefer decomposing materials, making them less of a threat indoors.
Muscina stabulans, known as the false stable fly, is slightly larger than the common house fly, with a generally dark gray appearance. Though it cannot bite, it may enter homes and lay eggs on slightly spoiled foods.
Its maggots are typically found in animal excrement and decomposing vegetable matter. The life cycle of the false stable fly is around 14 days. Although it doesn’t bite, its presence can be a nuisance when eggs are laid indoors. Recognizing its habits helps in managing infestations effectively.
The black garbage fly is a small, shiny insect about 1/5″” long. These slender flies thrive in areas with garbage, especially in rural regions where trash collection is irregular. Although not common in urban homes, they can be found in greater numbers where waste management practices are inadequate.
With a life cycle lasting about ten days, these flies develop rapidly. Proper garbage disposal is essential for reducing their presence.
The stable fly resembles a house fly but has a slender, pointed beak used for biting. Primarily found outdoors, they feed on livestock like horses and cattle but will bite humans during rainy periods when they come indoors.
Stable flies are more than just annoying pests—they affect both pets and livestock. These flies thrive in damp environments with decaying organic matter, manure, and urine-soaked straw. Regular cleanup of these materials can help reduce their population.
Flesh flies (Sarcophaga species) are bigger than house flies and are distinguished by their checkered abdomens. Their bodies are gray with black stripes across the thorax. Instead of laying eggs, flesh flies deposit live maggots. These maggots thrive in decaying meat, animal carcasses, and dog droppings. Flesh flies are frequently found near dead animals or snails.
The life cycle of flesh flies can be completed in just eight days. These flies are drawn to decaying organic matter. If you see slow-moving flies with checkered abdomens, a flesh fly infestation may be present.
Rancho Bernardo Pest Control starts fly control with a comprehensive inspection of your property. We check areas like garbage bins, drains, and spots with standing water or decaying matter. Our team identifies fly species such as blow flies, drain flies, and others.
We also evaluate the plumbing for leaks and blockages that may contribute to the problem. Using advanced tools, we locate larvae and adult flies in hidden spots. This detailed assessment allows us to design a treatment plan tailored to your specific fly infestation.
Prior to our technician’s visit, ensure both indoor and outdoor areas are thoroughly cleaned. This allows us to assess the fly infestation more accurately. Our team will inspect the property to identify the scope of the issue and check for potential plumbing problems.
For drain flies, we use specialized products to kill both the larvae and flies inside the drains. We treat around food prep areas without spraying directly on the surfaces. We then place traps in strategic areas to reduce fly activity.
Rancho Bernardo Pest Control provides a monthly service to control fly populations on your property. Our experts inspect drains, waste areas, and stagnant water to eliminate breeding spots.
